Getting your directory indexed by Google
Steps to take to help Google discover and index your new directory quickly.
Verify with Google Search Console
The first step is to verify ownership of your domain in Google Search Console. Use the HTML tag method and add the verification meta tag to your directory's Settings → SEO → Custom head tags field.
Submit your sitemap
Once verified, submit yourdomain.com/sitemap.xml via the Sitemaps section in Search Console. This tells Google exactly which pages exist on your site.
Request indexing for key pages
In Search Console, use URL Inspection → Request Indexing for your homepage, your most important category pages, and your first batch of listings. This doesn't guarantee faster indexing, but it prompts Google to prioritise these URLs.
Build some initial links
Google crawls pages it finds via links. Getting a few external links pointing to your directory accelerates initial discovery:
- List your directory on local community forums or neighbourhood Facebook groups.
- Ask the businesses you've listed to link back to their listing page.
- Publish your directory URL in your social media bio.
Be patient
A brand-new domain typically takes 4–12 weeks to start ranking for competitive queries. Focus on adding quality listings consistently — more indexed pages means more chances to rank.
